Tips on Picking a Name for Your Online Business

Starting an Online Business

Whether your company is a sole proprietorship or a mega-corporation, it
will all start with a concept and a name. So what’s in a name?

The answer is – quite a bit! The name you choose for {your business will~The name you pick for your company will}
help you build a brand and image in the marketplace. Therefore it should
be memorable, relevant and simple for your potential customers to remember.

Let’s look at the Google for example. At first glance, this is a
nonsensical name, but when you look a little closer – it all makes
perfect sense. Google (actually googolplex) does have a meaning – it means numbers without end
and impossible to count.

It’s an ideal name for a search engine – an infinite number of searchers
using their engine. So the name matches the business, making it relevant.
It’s unforgettable, because everyone remembers a funny sounding name like
that, even if most of us may not know exactly what it means. It’s easy
and simple to spell. This has helped enable Google to quickly make the
name familiar and profitable.

As seen by this example, your {business name is very important and you~As you can see from this example, your name is pretty important and you}
should take time to pick the right name for your business. It
should be easily brandable.

Registering your name may not always be done online, since businesses come
and go – but you will register your domain name. It’s good to
secure your business name with a DBA (Doing Business As license).

Here’s how to do it:

1. Brainstorm some names that you think will be appropriate for
your business. Make at least 10 and then prioritize them.
The names should project your USP (Unique Selling Proposition).

2. Go to www.uspto.gov/main/trademark.htm – the US Patent
and Trademark Office. You can do this in your own country
if you don’t reside in the US. Run a search to check the name isn’t taken, if it is move on to the next name on the list.

3. Repeat the search on the website of your state’s or province’s
authority for establishing corporations (usually the Secretary
of State). You can find this in Google. Be sure to do a special one for Nevada, if you are setting up a corporation or LLC there.

Inspect both the LLC and corporation databases. Do not have a
similar name to any other business. You can seriously harm
your credibility and you may be forced to stop using the
name if the other company can prove you are infringing on its
trademark.

4. Do a search on your local DBA listings (fictitious
names). You would use a DBA if you want your business to be
known as something other than its legal name. For example, the
legal name associated with Empowerism is Life, Education And
Prosperity, Inc. The DBA is Empowerism.  You will register at
your local municipal offices. This costs a small fee but is worth it,
as it will give you exclusive rights to your name.

5. Now move on to your domain name. I prefer to include my main keywords in the domain name URL. This helps in achieving a higher search engine ranking for those keywords and you can still use your business name on the page for branding.

6 Now choose a good logo and slogan to match your
name. This will help you brand {your business~This helps you brand your company}.

All that being said, the most important thing is to focus on finding your first customer to make your first sale. Don’t get bogged down in finding the perfect name, even if you find it, it won’t make any sales for you!

Tell your customers what service you are selling and explain what your service provides. What is the key benefit(s) to your customers? The Google Adsense Position What pain does it cure, what solution does it provide? Compare your service with that of your competitors and highlight what makes you stand out from the competition? Keep working on this until you can clearly separate yourself from the field. As stated earlier there must be a convincing reason for doing business with you, instead of your competitor.

Summarize the above into one tight, powerful, motivating phrase that will persuade your customer to do business with you and to trade their money for the benefits delivered by your service.

As you start to work through the above four steps, you may find this to be a lot harder than it looks. Don’t blow it off and give up! You must have a USP. If it was easy, everyone would have a great USP! Come up with a tight, sharp USP that sells your service to your customer.

Write tight, get right to the point, be keenly aware of the audience for the page, and don’t use a three-syllable word when a one or two-syllable word will do. Use call-to-action language and be interesting. The page should be so clearly organized that, in seconds, visitors can understand and get convinced to buy your product and be able to anticipate where a hypertext link – or a “Continue” button – will take them. Studies show that “ease of use” is the winning factor on an e-commerce site.
If you’re going to promote your service and expand your customer base using your website, potential clients have to be able to trust you. Their confidence in you and your products has to be boosted. Endorsements on your website from a valued friend or colleague, or a referral from a strategic partner are the types of “leads” that boost your credibility. You and your service must be perceived as being trust-worthy before your visitor will be confident enough to contact you or even buy your product.

Show prospects that you have their best interests at heart and that you can adapt or customize your service to meet their individual needs. Foster an ongoing relationship that steadily increases their trust levels and cements a view that you are an “authority” in your field.

Another important aspect of convincing prospective customers is to keep abreast of recent developments in your field. Check on what your competitors are writing about, and watch for new trends. This will keep your website current, razor-sharp and unique. By keeping your eyes open, you will be able to grab an angle or niche that hasn’t been well covered yet by your competitors. Portray this angle or niche on your website.

Finally, be wary of broadening the theme of your site too much. Try not to dilute your product or service’s targeted niche simply to expand your base of merchant partners. Remember; focus on your selling your service. That’s where the “meat and potatoes” of your business will come from.
Choosing a Domain Name

In the physical world, you can distinguish a business because of its structure, window displays, or signs. You can tell that a bank is a bank, or a clothing store is indeed a clothing store.

In the Internet, however, it is an entirely different story altogether. Your domain name is the only clue to your online business. You do not have visual clues: no location, no look, and no store design. Instead, users have to type in a word or a set of words to reach your site. Your prospective visitor has no way of knowing what your site is all about until he/she finds it and reads its contents. Who can ever tell that Amazon.com sells books? Or that Excite is a search engine?

Your domain name can spell your success on the Internet. A good domain name is the best asset you can ever have. It can make your business stand out in the crowd, or just float aimlessly in space.

The need to provide immediate clues to an online business led to the prevalence of generic domain names. Free the Google Adsense Recommended Position Generic names instantly provide the user with an idea of what a business is all about, what to expect and look for in a site. For instance, Etoys.com is a toy store.

One of the easiest ways to start a online business and earning quick profits is through affiliate marketing. With no website to develop, no product development to achieve, no refunds or customer problems to deal with, this is by far the most effective way of developing your internet business.

If you already have your affiliate products and you’re working at making more sales, an increase in commissions is the obvious goal of everyone. With more and more products hitting the online market, it’s essential to follow some simple yet crucial steps. So what are they?

If you want your affiliate program commissions to take off, literally overnight, these are the steps you need to seriously consider;

1. Do your research and check out the programs you’re thinking about promoting. It’s pretty obvious that you only want to promote a product that will give you the maximum paycheck in the shortest possible time.

The main factors to consider when doing this are obvious when you stop and think about them, but more often than not, are not fully considered before putting your time and money into making your product pay.

Check the commission structure and make sure it pays well. Also, try to find products that match your target audience and are already paying well to other affiliates. You soon know when a program isn’t meeting up to it’s promises – that’s the time to reconsider its worth and move on to the next.

As you’re probably going to be one of many affiliates promoting the same product, especially if it’s a good one, establish your USP – or ‘Unique Selling Position’. Set yourself up as offering that little something extra that makes you stand out above the crowd.
Write a short article to give away as an incentive to potential buyers. This gives you both greater credibility and extra drawing power.

Give information that’s not only free, but useful. When you do this, if what you give away for free is good, people naturally expect a great deal more from the bought product. Make recommendations about the product within the report if you can, and try to give just enough information to make people need the actual product.

2. When giving away free reports or ebooks, save and collect, at the very least, the name and email addresses of all those who download your gift. It’s now widely known that very few people make a purchase on their first introduction to a product.

This is where an autoresponder is invaluable as you can create a whole series of follow up messages to send to these prospects to entice them into buying your product. Anywhere between 6 and 10 messages are needed to finally clinch the sale, so automate this process and capitalize on the free report.

Once you have these prospects details, they are yours until the person unsubscribes. This means that you can send them information in the months ahead about other products you’re promoting, long after they’ve bought the original item.

If you develop an ezine, you are in a perfect position to send more valuable, and occasional free, information to these prospects who now value you as a source of knowledge and useful recommendations. You develop a relationship with them and they may stay with you for years to come. They begin to trust you and your recommendations and eventually, are likely to buy from you again.

3. Never underestimate the power of negotiation. Be prepared to haggle with a seller whose goods you wish to promote. Remember that all merchants need affiliates to market and sell their goods and will be more inclined to change their payment structure than potentially loose business if they see you as a good source of income.

Be bold and you could find yourself receiving a greater slice of the pie for all your advertising efforts. Don’t be greedy but be fair and you will be respected for it.

4. Use effective advertising techniques. ‘Pay Per Click’ will give you the most immediate results if you do your research right. Naturally, Google’s Adwords and Overture are the places to start, being leaders in the online PPC field. But, look around and research the smaller players who offer cheaper rates to a smaller audience. These include; ExcelSeek, JumpFind, LookQuick to name just three.

Ezine Top Sponsor and Solo ads can also give you a huge and quick return on your advertising buck with your ad being received by a responsive audience of your chosen market.

And as with any advertising campaigns – track your results. If you don’t know who’s clicking what, you’ll never know which ads are working.

Use these techniques and you’ll soon see an immediate improvement in your affiliate sales. Build on your successes and expansion and growth will follow.
